Matt Zemek (CollegeFootballNews.com) says Notre Dame was never the elite team people thought they were: "Notre Dame, much like Florida, had a regular season in which the ball just bounced the right way each and every Saturday. Notre dame got a lot of favorable breaks, a lot like Florida, and won a lot of squeakers because opponents made errors… There are some 12-0 seasons, some 11-1 seasons, in which teams regularly dominate and then they have one or two closes scrapes; those are the kinds of seasons that are reflective of really elite teams. When you’re winning because opponents make errors, it’s not reflective of the same degree of quality. So there was always a chance that Notre Dame would be exposed after a regular season in which they got all the right breaks, and that’s exactly what happened."
